Using Auto Repair IQ Before You Get Shop Quotes

How to search our estimates, what we source vs. what we do not, and how to negotiate with shops.

Search by repair, vehicle, and city

From the homepage, pick the repair type, a representative vehicle, and your city. You will see parts, labor, and total ranges with context on what is typically included in that repair.

If a repair does not apply to your engine type (for example, timing belt vs. timing chain), our catalog gates or discloses that — read the banner and config line on the page.

What is sourced vs. editorial

Labor rates by city come from the BLS-based formula described on About and /labor-rates. Parts dollars and labor hours on cost pages are editorial unless a repair type was explicitly re-sourced — see About for the current list.

We are a planning reference, not a quote from any shop and not a guarantee.

Negotiation workflow

Get two or three written estimates for the same scope. Compare totals and line items to our range. Ask shops to explain higher parts tiers or extra labor hours. Use our labor index if the conversation is specifically about hourly rates in your metro.
